THAD SIMON'S KEYNOTE

THE DRIVE

The sad statistics are well known.  We are heading for a severe shortage of calories on this planet within just a few decades.  Sustainable safe protein is core to our survival.  Fish provide some of the most critical nutritional values toward normal brain and eye development in infants and play an invaluable role in preventing many human illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease, lupus, depression and other mental illnesses.  Despite this fact, only about 16% of the protein consumed by humans is from fish.  The World needs to double food production by 2050…fish is the answer.

OUR VISION

There are over 600 varieties of fish farmed across the globe.  85% of the global population engaged in the aquaculture sectors are within Asia.  A tremendous amount of overfishing, and unnecessary waste and aqua culture farming inefficiencies are threatening the commercial fish populations to the point of depletion.  The only way to close the gap in protein required to ensure our survival, is to apply innovation so that commercially produced fish are optimized in terms of both yield and sustainability.  With the development of new technology, bespoke breeding can take place off season, new solutions are created to eliminate and prevent disease, and sustainable and traceable supply chain methods can be created to make sure there is little to zero waste.  There are challenges which exist that can cause even the most prescient innovations to fail.  Often innovators in Aquaculture find it difficult to raise early stage capital to make it beyond its critical early stage of its science development.  Conversely Investors without relevant Industry knowledge are blind to the innovation’s potential impact.  With the right attention from the appropriate investors and subject matter experts, impactful innovation can be identified and successfully developed to accelerate the availability, sustainability and affordable access to this natural and wide variety protein and primary source of essential minerals and omega-3 fatty acids.

HOW TO?

Thad Simons, Co-Founder of The Yield Lab globally, will provide his front row observations as the first mover in creating a global Agtech Fund and Accelerator.  Thad comes to this role after a successful career in industry focused on animal nutrition and aquaculture.  He will discuss the impact of early stage investing in advancing best practices, innovation and Start-ups survival.

PROOF OF CONCEPT STARTUP CHALLENGE

This early-stage startups challenge has been designed to showcase AIC (Singapore Aquaculture Innovation Centre) recent inauguration. This year's challenge is upon invitation only.

The moderator will run a 5 minutes Q&A after each pitch.

The four judges will choose a winner behind closed door while the moderator will ask each contestant to tell the audience more about their background. The 5th vote is the audience's vote.

The winner is entitled to:

  • Receive up to S$50,000 worth of Service-in-Kind grant for their PoC study in AIC
